About Us

NM Voters First (NMVF) is a grassroots 501c4 organization with the mission to support candidates that believe in empowering and enhancing democracy and encourage legislators to support fair and equitable elections that expand the peoples' political voice

NMVF is dedicated to ensuring our elections are fair and equitable, in order to strengthen our democracy. We work to increase voting and engagement, ensuring elected officials listen to everyone they represent. We are trusted advocates who use research-backed information and policies about elections and government to uplift everyday people in the political process.

Thanks to the efforts of NM Voters First and our diverse coalition we achieved a huge victory in 2025, the passage of semi-open primaries. This historic change means that starting in June 2026, over 330,000 independent, unaffiliated, and Decline-to-State (DTS) voters will be able to vote in primaries without the extra barrier of having to change their registration. This law expands access, increases participation, and strengthens our political process. We continue to work with our coalition partners and state and local election officials to ensure a smooth and informational implementation process that will prepare voters for these changes.

We are committed to building on this success by preparing for the new semi-open primaries and advancing other important reforms, such as bringing Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), also known as instant runoff voting, to Albuquerque. We are driven to build a more inclusive and responsive government that works for all New Mexicans and will continue to advocate for policies that support this goal.

We believe in:

  • Deepening and broadening voter voter in our electoral systems.
  • Expanding the participation and engagement of the electorate by guaranteeing access to all publicly funded elections from everyone eligible New Mexico voter.
  • Increasing the responsiveness of elected officials to their constituents by advocating for equitable representation in government, ensuring that those who serve reflect the diverse lived experiences of New Mexicans.
  • Promoting electoral systems that ensure fair outcomes and majority support and advancing legislative reforms essential for a more inclusive democracy.
